Master Module: Medical Biochemistry

Discover the fascinating biochemistry that keeps us alive and join our master module Medical Biochemistry!

This master module provides an in-depth exploration of important enzyme cofactors, with a particular focus on the biosynthesis and function of the molybdenum cofactor (Moco). You will examine the essential roles that Moco plays in life with focus on health and disease. You will learn how disruptions in its biosynthetic pathway can lead to severe metabolic and neurological disorders.

The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory experience. Students will analyze biomarkers in a patient-like setting using HPLC chromatography to mimic the diagnostic path in the clinic. These studies will be backed up with mechanistic biochemical, biophysical and cell culture studies including expression and purification of biosynthetic enzymes, investigation of protein structure and function (e.g. circular dichroism spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry, size exclusion chromatography, fluorescence microscopy) and immunohistochemistry.

This module is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding in the field inborn errors of amino acid metabolism.
